Hydraulic Repair, Hose and Fluid Power for Agriculture

Farm work runs to the calendar. Silage, harvest and drilling each come with a window that won’t wait, and nearly every machine working that window depends on agricultural hydraulics: the loader lifting bales, the telehandler stacking them, the trailer tipping grain.

Control Gear Group, specialists in compressed air and industrial equipment, has supplied and repaired fluid power equipment since 1973. From Treforest we carry out on-site service across South Wales and the South West, and supply UK-wide.

What Does a Farm Need From a Fluid Power Supplier?

Repairs done quickly and correctly during the season, and fewer of them, because the equipment was looked after before it started. Behind that sit clean hydraulic oil, hose that matches the machine, and compressed air and dust control that meet the regulations.

Control Gear repairs hydraulic pumps, cylinders, motors and valves, makes up hydraulic hose, and supplies and services compressed air, filtration and dust extraction for farms.

When a cylinder seal goes or a hose bursts mid-season, the real cost is the lost days. Safety is part of the same job. Agriculture, forestry and fishing recorded 22 worker deaths in Great Britain in 2025/26, and over the previous five years the sector’s fatal injury rate averaged 21 times the all-industry rate, according to the HSE’s fatal injury statistics for 2026. Machinery that is maintained properly, with the right parts fitted, is one of the ways that number comes down.

Hydraulic Repair and Servicing for Farm Machinery

Loaders, telehandlers, tipping trailers, balers and bale handlers all rely on hydraulic cylinders, pumps, motors and valves. Mud, grit and the pressure washer are hard on rod seals and wipers, and the cylinder that starts weeping in spring is often the one that lets go in August.

Workshop and On-Site Repair

Our hydraulic engineers repair pumps, cylinders, motors and valves, both in our workshop and on site. We strip, rebuild and test components, and supply replacements from Bosch Rexroth, Parker Hannifin and Eaton when a rebuild isn’t worth doing. You’ll find the full scope on our hydraulic repair and servicing page.

Winter Maintenance and Oil Sampling

The winter months are when this work pays off. Our proactive maintenance packages, oil sampling and condition monitoring pick up wear before it turns into a breakdown, so seals and pumps get dealt with while the machine is parked, not while the crop is waiting.

Accumulator Supply and Recertification

Bladder and piston accumulators store hydraulic energy under a gas pre-charge, and that charge drops over time. We supply new bladder and piston units, and our accumulator workshop offers a same-day removal, recertification and refit service, with written schemes of examination under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 where they apply. Pump, valve and accumulator work is set out on our main hydraulics page.

Hydraulic Hose and Fittings Made Up for the Machine

Hose takes a beating on farm machinery. It rubs on the chassis, flexes at every articulation point and sits out in all weathers. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) lists failing to replace damaged hoses and fitting makeshift couplings among the operator errors behind high-pressure fluid injection injuries. Its guidance on high pressure fluid injection is clear that pressure must be released before maintenance and that a leak should never be found by feeling for it.

Our hose team is fully certified by the BFPA (British Fluid Power Association) and makes up hydraulic hose assemblies to order, matching:

  • Hose and fittings from Eaton, Gates, Parker, Manuli and Bridgestone
  • SAE, DIN, ISO and EN ranges
  • Braided, spiral and thermoplastic constructions

Assemblies can be pressure tested and certified. Bring the old hose or the part number and the replacement will match the pressure rating and the ends, which is exactly where a makeshift repair goes wrong.

Not every hose on a farm carries oil. We also supply suction and delivery hose, layflat, fuel hose and food-grade hose, with cam lock fittings, for moving water, slurry, fuel and milk. See our hydraulic hose range for sizes and specifications.

HYDAC Filtration and Fluid Care

Farm machinery lives outdoors and gets washed down, so water and dirt find their way into the hydraulic oil. Milky oil means water. Fine particles wear pumps and valves long before anything looks wrong from the outside.

As an official partner of HYDAC, the German fluid power and filtration manufacturer, we supply the full HYDAC filtration and fluid care range. For farm equipment that means:

  • Offline filtration trolleys to clean oil without draining the system
  • FAM dewatering units and varnish removal for contaminated oil
  • AquaSensor and contamination sensors that report particle levels to ISO 4406, the international code for hydraulic fluid cleanliness
  • Diaphragm accumulators built for mobile machinery
  • Proportional and cartridge valves, gear and piston pumps and oil coolers

Our mobile service team installs, commissions and repairs HYDAC systems on site, so a fluid care unit or sensor can be fitted where the machine is kept.

We’ve also been an authorised Pall industrial filtration distributor for well over 20 years. Our industrial and process filtration division covers hydraulic filter elements, water removal, purifiers and purifier hire.

Compressed Air for Dairy, Workshops and Packhouses

On a dairy unit, robotic milking, automatic feeding and ventilation all run on compressed air. If the compressor stops, milking stops. Rotary screw compressors suit that round-the-clock duty, and a duty and standby pair means a service visit or a fault doesn’t leave the herd waiting. Where air can come into contact with milk or packaging, oil-free compressors delivering ISO 8573-1 Class 0 air take compressor oil out of the picture as a contamination source.

We are an Atlas Copco Premier Distributor, supplying and servicing compressors from one of the world’s largest compressed air manufacturers. Our page on compressed air for agriculture covers compressor types and sizing for farms in more detail. Away from the parlour, compressed air drives:

  • Workshop tools, tyre inflation and radiator blow-down
  • Air knives and form-fill-seal packing machines post-harvest
  • Grain aeration, through low-pressure blowers

For crop stores, Atlas Copco PSA and membrane generators produce nitrogen on site at purities up to 99.999%, which helps extend shelf life after harvest without cylinder deliveries. One caution goes with it. A nitrogen-enriched store is oxygen-deficient, so it must be treated as a confined space under the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 before anyone goes in.

A farm workshop compressor and its receiver are a pressure system like any other. Under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000, a pressure system must not be operated without a written scheme of examination in place. We prepare Written Schemes of Examination and carry out servicing, leak detection and air quality testing through our compressed air service team.

Grain and Feed Dust Extraction

Grain dust causes rhinitis, asthma and farmer’s lung, and the HSE says cases of occupational asthma in agriculture are double the national average. Its guidance on grain dust names local exhaust ventilation (LEV) and enclosure as controls under COSHH, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002.

Under COSHH, LEV must be thoroughly examined and tested at least every 14 months. Grain dust is also explosible, which brings bins, silos, dryers and feed mills within the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR).

We are an authorised distributor and Gold Channel Partner for Nederman, the Swedish extraction manufacturer, and supply dust collectors, extraction arms, fans and ATEX-compliant filter systems for combustible dust. Our certified engineers carry out the LEV testing as well, and the range is on our dust and fume extraction page.

Where Each Division Fits on a Farm

Most farms deal with a dealer for the tractor, a hose supplier, someone else for the parlour compressor and nobody in particular for the grain store extraction. One fluid power specialist covering hydraulics, hose, air and filtration means one call when a fault could sit in more than one place. We hold ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 accreditation.

Book Your Pre-Season Check With Control Gear

One boundary is worth stating. The milking machine and the vacuum system that runs it are built and tested to ISO 5707 and ISO 6690 and normally stay with your parlour dealer. We look after the compressed air feeding your robots, the hydraulics on the machines around them and everything in this list.

Before silage or harvest, send us the make and model of your loaders and handlers, your hose list and your compressor details. Our Treforest team will plan the hydraulic repairs, hose, oil sampling and compressor servicing so they’re done before the season starts. Call 01443 843126 or use the contact form to arrange a visit.
