How compressed air helped a vet care for the environment, their business, and their patients at the same time
Case study
An essential gas with a single, expensive supplier
When a popular veterinary surgery was concerned about its oxygen supplies, Control Gear helped it in more ways than it could imagine. After working with our team, it found that it not only had the oxygen it needed but was also saving money, being better neighbours, and being better vets as a result.
Any pet owner will tell you how much love and joy they can bring and how important it is to have a great vet nearby. One local surgery was incredibly popular, but that popularity had started to create problems.
Like human medical procedures, animals often need oxygen during surgery and recovery and sometimes for therapy. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the practice to consider its oxygen supply. The high demand for oxygen during the pandemic left them concerned about relying on a single provider. After the pandemic, the rise in remote work allowed more people to enjoy pet ownership, leading to increased demand for more frequent and costly oxygen deliveries at the vet.
After researching their options for oxygen supply, they came to Control Gear.

Designing a bespoke solution
We quickly knew the solution to all their problems was on-site oxygen generation. This uses an air compressor to remove nitrogen from the air, increasing the proportion of oxygen from around 21% to over 90%. The air is then filtered to remove any impurities.
We recommended a compact but efficient Atlas Copco unit. Designed for this type of use, it operates quietly, meaning it does not create a nuisance. But it also reliably generates more than enough oxygen for the vets’ needs.
The unit brought more benefits, too:
- By providing on-demand oxygen, the surgery could generate precisely what was required, ensuring that it was not buying gases it did not need or losing space to large empty bottles waiting for collection.
- By eliminating the need for deliveries, the practice substantially reduced its environmental impact, eliminating the need for hundreds of kilograms of deliveries every few days.
- Installing the unit close to where oxygen was needed reduced the need for staff to lug heavy bottles around and the risk that posed. Plus, they no longer had to spend the time and effort managing bottled deliveries, meaning staff had more time and energy for pets and their owners.
- And, to top it all, they are saving money. They estimate that on-site generation, tailored to their precise needs, is saving them more than half the money they used to spend on bottled oxygen delivery.

Compressed air is often associated with industry, and many do not realise that air compressor technology can offer the precision needed to provide the gentlest care to our pets.
A versatile technology for almost every sector
Using an Atlas Copco compressor, with regular servicing, means that the surgery can depend on medical-grade oxygen for decades to come. Their new set-up allows them to meet changes in demand, even if they grow further, but also means they are a good neighbour, producing the oxygen quietly and without polluting deliveries.
You would be surprised how versatile compressed air can be. Whether you consider yourself an expert or novice, contact Control Gear. You might be surprised to find out how much you can get from compressed air.
